Horseshoe Prairie Nordic Ski Area

The Horseshoe Prairie Nordic Ski Area, for cross country skiing and snowshoeing, was created in the 1980s as a non-groomed trail system. A decent selection of routes keeps winter enthusiasts coming back, and if the variety doesn’t grab your attention the scenery will. Just a short distance from Walla Walla, there is plenty of time for a cup of coffee in the morning, a few hours in the mountains, and back in time to hang…

Tiger Creek Road

A local gateway into the Umatilla National Forest, the Tiger Creek Road (sometimes referred to as Tiger Ridge Road or Tiger Canyon Road) is not maintained in the winter and, therefore, an excellent candidate for snow sports. When the snow is low, this road is often just high enough to escape the fog.

Touchet Corral Sno-Park

Basically, a sno-park is a parking lot cleared of snow near groomed or backcountry trails. The Touchet Corral Sno-Park is just shy of Ski Bluewood and offers an alternative winter sport experience to downhill skiing. Cross country skiers can share the trail with the snowmobiles. Folks wanting to snowshoe have the option to choose a more primitive trail. Either option are great ways to enjoy winter in the forest.

Middle Point Ridge Trail

Following the North Fork of the Touchet River and nestled between Chase Mountain and Middle Point Ridge, the Middle Point Trailhead is a mere 17 miles from Dayton, WA and 48 miles from Walla Walla. The views are fantastic. Many folks might use this road in the winter on the way to Ski Bluewood, but the views in spring, summer, and fall are equally as pleasing. As the crow flies, the trailhead is almost the…

Rose Springs Sno-Park

If you thrive in winter and enjoy the challenges of fresh, deep powder, then Rose Springs Sno-Park is your new best friend. Starting at around 4,000 feet, outdoor enthusiasts are treated to plowed forest roads and breathtaking views of the Blue Mountains. Enjoy an easy day on the sled hill or put in some serious miles exploring the forest in the winter. It’s a totally different look at some your favorite, more remote spots to…
